I never knew writing a poem could make me feel better!

What Is Poetic Medicine?

Poetic Medicine is the practice of reading and writing poetry for self-reflection, healing, and integration. It differs from “creative writing” in that the aim is not to produce Art in a formal sense. This does not mean the process is not generative; sometimes beautiful poems do emerge. However, the aim is to connect to oneself through writing and listening, and to others with whom you share the practice.

In the words of poetry therapist John Fox, “Writing and reading poems is a way of seeing and naming where we have been, where we are, and where we are going with our lives.” (from Poetic Medicine: The Healing Art of Poem-Making)

This practice is backed by neuroscience, too! Recent studies suggest our brains are hardwired to respond to poetry. Because we read and write poetry with a different part of our brain than prose, poetry provides a kind of “shortcut” to our inner selves.

Where Does It Happen?

Anywhere! I’ve taught workshops online, in parks and public libraries, as well as retreat spaces! The most unusual place I’ve taught was in a bird-watching shelter (above).

Poetry + Yoga

As a certified yoga teacher (YTT200) and a Practitioner of Poetic Medicine (PPM), I often integrate mindful movement into poetry workshops, and include poetry in my yoga classes! This helps free the language held within the body, and tune into its inherent wisdom.

Gentle, intentional movements also prepare and soothe the body before and after writing sessions. Poetry forces us to slow down, pay attention, and listen. In this way it serves as a mindfulness practice.
